Mats Hummels has big plans for the new season with Borussia Dortmund.

“I’ve had very good preparation so far due to the fact that I was out for the last five weeks last season. This gave me time to clear my head,” said the 2014 soccer world champion. The 33-year-old had sustained a muscle injury and was therefore able to optimally prepare for the new season in rehab. “I’m getting fitter than ever before,” said Hummels after the first public training session.

“Of course I have big plans because I wasn’t satisfied with my last season,” said the BVB defense chief. That should get better in the new season, even if he is now the senior in the team. Hummels knows about his role. “I have to be someone who leads the way – in training, but above all in the game,” said Hummels.

Happy with transfers

You can also be very satisfied with the new signings. “We can be very happy with what happened on the transfer market. Even if we haven’t seen that much of it in training because we only had a handful of professionals with us.”

The former international is looking forward to the fans the most. After the first training session on Wednesday, he patiently fulfilled every autograph request for more than half an hour. “It’s no fun without fans. We in Dortmund in particular are very spoiled. It’s nice to see that people are interested again after these two years when the stadiums were empty,” said Hummels.
