Tatjana Maria and Jule Niemeier want to refine the greatest success of their tennis career so far. The two tournament surprises meet for the first time in the Wimbledon quarter-finals.
Tatjana Maria, 34 years old, ten Wimbledon participations, mother of two. Jule Niemeier, 22 years old, is only taking part in the classic lawn for the first time.
Despite all the differences before the big German duel, the two surprise players of the tournament have one feeling in common. “Being in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon is the same for her as it is for me,” Maria said before the game on Tuesday (2 p.m. CEST): “It’s fantastic.” For both of them, getting into the top eight in a Grand Slam tournament means the greatest success of their careers. The most important answers before the German Wimbledon festival.
Who is the favourite?
Also because of their sovereign performances, Niemeier is slightly favored in the duel. She has a variable game on grass, serves well, has a powerful forehand, likes to go to the net, has feeling. But Maria is a fighter and uses her undercut balls for an unusual and unpleasant shot that drove several opponents to despair. Her husband and trainer Charles-Edouard Maria has always designed the right match tactics. “I don’t really have a problem with that because I know how to play a slice myself,” says Niemeier confidently about her opponent’s greatest strength. “I’m not worried that I don’t know how to react to it.”
How much prize money is at stake?
Both players have already received the equivalent of 360,000 euros for reaching the quarter-finals, which exceeds the entire prize money from Niemeier’s previous career. In the semifinals there would be 621,000 euros, the winner of the tournament even gets 2.32 million euros.
How difficult was the way to the quarterfinals?
With the exception of the third round match against Maria Sakkari, who is fifth in the world rankings, Maria always had to go through three sets and has been on the court for 7:31 hours in singles. It was almost two hours less for Niemeier (5:33). Nevertheless, Maria, who is twelve years her senior, feels rested enough for the big game. “I have to honestly say that it’s good for me because we always have a day off. I feel relatively fit, I think that’s not a problem for me.”
