The Portuguese Football Federation sent representatives to Qatar and discussed the protection of human rights, LGBTQI+ rights and freedom of the press, meeting with institutions within the UEFA working group established in 2021.
The same working group of which the FPF is a part also met with migrant workers and took a clear stand in the uncompromising defense of all human rights, whether workers (local or migrant) or LGBTQI+ communities.
On the other hand, summing up the results of his visit to Qatar, he acknowledged that significant progress had been made on workers’ rights issues since the changes in the legislation, as evidenced by the recent reports of the International Labor Organization on Qatar.
They mention, for example, that 242,000 workers have changed jobs (a total of 18,000 in the previous year) since the introduction of new labor laws in 2020, that 280,000 received pay increases, that 338 companies were closed last summer for non-compliance , and that heat-related illnesses have dropped dramatically since 2019, by 400 percent.
