“We also want to play up front in the 1st class”

21 wins in 26 games, 16 points ahead of the runners-up – in view of such numbers one can already speak of a perfect season. “It was definitely a special season,” says Martin Schurm, who was able to celebrate the championship title in the 2nd class in his first year as section head of SV Lichtenberg.

With a good mixture of experienced and young players around Captain Thomas Mayr, the basis for safe promotion to the 1st class was laid, especially in the fall (12 wins and one draw).

And trainer Daniel Wierstorff proved to be a stroke of luck for the Lichtenbergers in his first position as a combat team trainer. “He left his mark as a football specialist,” says Schurm. Players have evolved, become top performers like Josip Gavric, the game system was clear and many young players got their chance.

The dominance over the entire season was not to be expected for Schurm. “I knew the team was good when I took office, but I was surprised by how good they were.” The championship season is also due to the great cohesion of the entire team.

Schurm sees with tears in the eyes of coach Wierstorff that Thomas Mayr will also be active in the new season in St. Magdalena and thus in the state league, especially with the captain and top performers. “I already feel sorry for Thomas, he will be difficult to replace.” But SV Lichtenberg will not go on a big shopping spree.

With the new coach Gerhard Lindinger, the path of introducing many young players to the fighting team should be continued. So in the 1st class the aim of the Lichtenbergers is clearly defined. “We want to play up front, reach the top 5.” With a new floodlight system, which will be opened in autumn, there will also be championship games on Friday or Saturday evenings in the future.
