ÖFB women between pride and disappointment

ÖFB women between pride and disappointment

Proud of the performance, disappointment about the 0:1 – the reactions to the defeat at the start of the European Championship were divided in the ÖFB camp. The voices:

  • Irene Fuhrmann (ÖFB team leader): “Unfortunately we didn’t take a point in the end, it hurts after such a performance. We did very well and were able to create one or two scoring chances in the second half. Of course England dominated the game. But I’m proud of the way we perform. I think something is possible. In the offensive game we lacked speed and penetration in the last line. England is an absolute top team. We’ve played them twice in the last year, we’re the only team to have conceded just one goal against them. If we come back with courage and conviction against Northern Ireland then we can win.”
  • Sarah Zadrazil (ÖFB midfielder): “I’m disappointed at the moment, I think we had a great second half with one or two half chances. We held up really well against a favourite. Too bad it didn’t make it to one point. We are only strong as a team, we showed that today. But you can lose against England, we still have two games. We can kick great, we have to prove that in the next games.”
  • Sarina Wiegman (England Team Principal): “We showed two different faces. The start was pretty good, and then we dominated the game. In the second half we sometimes played better, sometimes less well. Austria still had chances. It was a tough game, Austria were good opponents.”
