In Austria Group A of the women’s soccer EURO, the goal difference can ultimately decide whether you are in the quarter-finals or eliminated. So it doesn’t hurt that Norway “only” beat the blatant tournament outsider Northern Ireland in Southampton in front of an ÖFB delegation around sports director Peter Schöttel 4:1, especially since it was already 2:0 after 13 minutes and the Scandinavians in had triumphed 6-0 in each of the two most recent duels with the Northern Irish women. If everything goes according to plan, there will be a showdown between Austria and Norway on Friday (9 p.m.) in Brighton. One point could then be enough for one of the two teams to advance to the knockout stages.
But that is music of the future. “I don’t want to talk about Norway yet,” said Schöttel. “The focus is exclusively on Northern Ireland.”
He shared his findings with the team yesterday before training, and there weren’t many surprises. “The match was decided quickly, the Northern Irish were very clumsy at the beginning. That won’t happen to them again,” explained Schöttel after the game, which attracted almost 10,000 fans to St. Mary’s Stadium in Southampton. A similar backdrop can also be expected on Monday (6 p.m., ORF 1) at Austria’s match. (Alex)
