Excitement among fans of Borussia Mönchengladbach and other clubs: The new jerseys from the supplier Puma are very minimalistic and do without the traditional coat of arms.
Every now and then, football fans struggle with the new jersey design of their teams at the start of the season. After all, every club needs a new set of jerseys before each season, if only to keep the sales figures in the fan shops stable – and as long as football is not yet being played, the supporters discuss colors and patterns. After a few weeks, the topic is usually dealt with again, the habituation effect only takes a little time.
However, there has been no argument about football fashion as intensely as about the new design by supplier Puma for a long time. The sporting goods manufacturer, which supplies various European football clubs, has taken an almost revolutionary approach: The players’ chest now has the name of the club instead of the coat of arms emblazoned on them. It is also unusual that the design is the same for all clubs, so many clubs will play with very similar jerseys this season – albeit not all the time, as they are only alternative or cup jerseys.
A shirt without a coat of arms makes fans angry
This seems to drive some fans crazy before the season really takes off. Their heads are hotly debated on social networks and online forums. Some initially thought the design was a fake or the design was a simple fan t-shirt. But no, this is how clubs like Borussia Mönchengladbach, AC Milan or Manchester City will actually appear.
There are several reasons for criticism. First, because the design seems amateurish to some: “Photoshop Philipp is now working as a designer for Puma,” scoffs the “Fums” portal. Second, because clubs that have no connection with each other are now wearing almost identical shirts. Thirdly, because the traditional club crest is missing – and that hits the heart of the fan base. “A jersey that can be found as a copy at several other clubs and which puts the most important element, the diamond, in the background, has absolutely nothing to do with Borussia. Shame on you,” raged a fan of Borussia Mönchengladbach on Twitter at the introduction of the new camisole.
BVB has already rowed back
At Borussia Dortmund, the supporters’ protest has already had tangible consequences. The black and yellow should also play in the cup in a jersey without the club crest on the chest. The design was leaked in advance, however, followed by an outcry from the fan base: “Anyone who does not honor the coat of arms is not worth Borussia”, it said on a banner. The club rowed back: In the first round of the cup, BVB played in the jerseys from last year.
And the players still have some difficulties getting used to the new design. Muhammed Gümüşkaya from Fenerbahce Istanbul wanted to kiss the crest on the shirt after his goal in the newly created UEFA Conference League against HJK Helsinki – and.
