The Spanish Silverstone winner relegated his Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc to second place by 50 thousandths of a second. Third went to world champion Max Verstappen, who had secured pole position for the sprint race in the Red Bull the day before. Mick Schumacher took 15th place in the Haas, Sebastian Vettel in the Aston Martin was two places further up.
Record world champion Lewis Hamilton drove his Mercedes onto the track in the one-hour session with a long delay one day before the Austrian Grand Prix. Work continued on his Silver Arrow after he and his teammate George Russell crashed into the barriers during qualifying on Friday.
It looked in the garage “as if someone had dropped a Lego car,” said team boss Toto Wolff. Hamilton was ninth in free practice, Russell was seventh.
Verstappen leads the classification with 181 points, teammate Sergio Perez is second with 147 points, Leclerc third with 138 points ahead of Sainz (127).
