Formula 1: Verstappen achieves pole position for the Austrian Grand Prix

Victory at the Red Bull Ring in Austria extended Verstappen’s championship lead to 38 points over his teammate Sergio Perez, who finished fifth after starting thirteenth. Leclerc is six points further back

“It was a decent race. We had a good pace at the beginning and then we were very close. It was good, it was the way a sprint should go, quite flat,” said Verstappen, who had qualified on pole on Friday.

“The car is good. Just a few things need to be fine-tuned, but overall we were very competitive again this weekend,” added the 24-year-old, who took the checkered flag 1.675sec ahead of Leclerc.

Verstappen also won the last sprint of the season at Imola in April. His army of Dutch fans launched orange smoke flares from the stands before and after the 23-lap race.

Mercedes’ George Russell was fourth, with teammate Lewis Hamilton, seven-time world champion, scoring a point in eighth.

The sprint race awards points to the top eight, with the winner taking eight.

Hamilton started ninth, but on the first lap he came into contact with Pierre Gasly’s AlphaTauri and dropped to 11th. The Briton fought back and animated a battle with Mick Schumacher for eighth position. (Reporting by Alan Baldwin in London Edited in Spanish by Javier López de Lérida)
