Wimbledon: Federer’s opponent had to give up in the fifth set

The roofs on Center Court and Court 1 had to be closed again. Among others, Austria’s Dennis Novak, whose first-round game against Steve Johnson (USA) had to be postponed to Wednesday, suffered. On the other hand, Alexander Zverev and Diego Schwartzman as well as tournament record winner Roger Federer have already mastered their first hurdle.

The Swiss was already under heavy pressure against Adrian Mannarino. The old master was behind in sets 1: 2 before the French twisted his knee in a lunge step at 6: 4, 6: 7, 3: 6 and 4: 2 and then had to be treated. After that nothing worked for Mannarino, he lost the set 2: 6 and had to give up. “He was the better player,” admitted Gentleman Federer afterwards.

The number four seeded Zverev gave the Dutch qualifier Tallon Griekspoor no chance at 6: 3, 6: 4, 6: 1. Schwartzman also made short work of the listless Benoit Paire (Fra) at 6: 3, 6: 4, 6: 0 in just 91 minutes. Zverev was especially happy about the fans present. “It’s great to see that everything is slowly getting back to normal. When I came here on the pitch, I was very happy,” said last year’s US Open finalist.
