Fans fight for two clubs

Six out of ten Portuguese support more than one football club. This is one of the main findings of the first barometer carried out by the Football Observatory, initiated by the Clubs League, in partnership with other organizations such as the Instituto Português do Marketing.

According to this study, most Portuguese people justify the fact that they “pull” for more than one team by geographic connection (they are from a club in their home country) or family traditions. In fact, family is by far the main reason (58%) for choosing their favorite club, with much more influence than the influence of friends (5%) or the number of titles won (2%). Interestingly, only 23% of respondents consider themselves members of a club of their choice.

For the League, one of the most worrying data is the low level of association that this barometer shows. Less than a third of the Portuguese are members of what they call the main club. And even among the outcasts, declaring a high interest in their team, the percentage of like-minded people does not exceed 49%. Also for this reason, only 25% of the fans often go to the stadium to watch games.
