Martin Sjögren is the team boss of Norway’s women’s football team, who suffered a nightmare night from Brighton. The impressive crowd (28,000 fans) made the number eleven in the FIFA world rankings freeze in awe and slide into the heaviest defeat since the international premiere in 1978. Mister Sjögren commented on the 8-0 debacle against England without a smile.
“We actually had a good plan and started well. The last 85 minutes were terrible,” said the 45-year-old Swede. So with a playing time of 90+ minutes, there was pretty little that was positive. Norway was defensively out of control, before the break the “Lionesses” gave the red-blue six goals within 29 minutes. Beth Mead, club-mate of Manuela Zinsberger and Laura Wienroither at WFC Arsenal, recorded her tournament goals two, three and four. The 27-year-old is well on the way to becoming the EURO marksman queen.
The Scandinavians snuck out like beaten dogs from the catacombs they have to return to on Friday against Austria. The venue is identical – the 30,000-seat Amex Stadium in Brighton. “It’s not easy to find the right words now. We’re very depressed,” admitted Sjögren. “This bankruptcy throws us to the ground, but we have to keep our heads up,” emphasized striker Ada Hegerberg.
