Warrior left the Tour de France due to illness

Portuguese cyclist Rubén Guerreiro, 28, withdrew from the Tour de France this Sunday and has not entered Stage 9 again. The race (192.9 km, completed in Switzerland between Aigle and Châtel) was won by Luxembourger Bob Jungels (Ag2R-Citroen), who made a solo escape of 70 kilometers.

At first, information was spread that Ruben Guerreiro had contracted Covid-19, but the team denied this. “Today I will not leave. this sunday [sábado] I started getting sick. I feel very bad, I have to go home,” said Ruben Guerreiro, who came to the Tour with great hopes of at least winning the stage. Nelson Oliveira (Movistar) is now the only cyclist to represent Portugal in the three-week race.

This Sunday’s stage was a medium mountain. The day route started with 21 cyclists, but the group split into mountain sections. With 70 kilometers to go, Bob Jungels took the lead and was never caught again. Thibault Pinault was still 20 seconds from the last climb, but could not catch up with the Luxembourger.

The group of favorites arrived 49 seconds after the winner, with Tadej Pogacar (Emirates) trying to win a few more seconds on his way to the finish line. Jonas Vingegor (Jumbo) had a hard time and stuck to the yellow jersey. This Monday is a day off.
