Suddenly nothing worked anymore: on the tenth stage of the Tour de France, climate activists forced a stopover on the bike tour. A group of about ten demonstrators blocked the road from Morzine to Megeve via a sit-in and set off pyrotechnics.
Several activists wore white T-shirts that read “We have 989 days left.” The group was pulled off the street by the police. “With the government not taking care of the climate crisis, we must come and take over the Tour de France to bring attention back to what is important for our survival,” the Derniere Renovation movement said. Already at the French Open, an activist from Derniere Renovation interrupted the semi-final between Croatian Marin Cilic and Casper Ruud from Norway by tying herself to the net.
Race neutralized
Leading Italian Alberto Bettiol drove through a puff of pink smoke and was stopped by race control shortly afterwards with about 36 kilometers to go. This neutralized the race, all drivers had to stop. After about ten minutes, the field continued with the same time intervals as before.
In the final sprint of a breakaway group, the Dane Magnus Cort prevailed and won his second tour stage. Tadej Pogacar finished 20th, 8:54 minutes behind and defended his yellow jersey just ahead of the German Bora professional Lennard Kämna, who reduced his deficit to eleven seconds in tenth place on the day.
