Portuguese coach Rui Vitoria is Egypt’s new football coach, with a four-year contract, the Egyptian federation said in a statement posted on social media on Tuesday.
On Twitter, Rui Vitoria introduces himself in a video as the new coach of the Pharaohs, Mohamed Salah’s team, for the “next four years”.
The 52-year-old Portuguese coach is joining the Egyptian national team to replace Ehab Galal, the coach who was sacked in June just two months after also replacing Portugal’s Carlos Queiroz.
Queiroz, on the other hand, left the national side after his contract expired in March, in the period following the defeat in the African Cup of Nations final and failure to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, both of which were defeated by Senegal.
For Rui Vitoria, this will be his first experience as a manager after a career as a club manager, culminating in his time at Benfica, where he won three league titles, two Super Cups, the Portuguese Cup and the League Cup.
The Ribatejo-born coach has another Portuguese Cup won while playing for Vitória de Guimarães.
Away from Portugal, Rui Vitoria won the Saudi Arabian Championship and Cup with Al Nasr, his last club before signing in May 2021 with Spartak Moscow, where he remained until December of that year, when he was sacked.
During his career, the coach has also managed Vilafrancense, juniors Benfica, Fatima and Pacos de Ferreira.
