“We were among the top three teams in the spring, the bar is high, but we don’t want to lower it,” said Forward Steyr coach Daniel Madlener. Is this confident approach for the tenth of the pre-season really the right one? It would probably be better if the club baked smaller rolls after some disastrous test match results (0:6 against Liefering or 0:8 against Sparta Prague II) and the embarrassing cup defeat against regional league team WSC/Hertha (0:1). Staying up in the league and a carefree season should be the priority.
But Madlener is now also known in Steyr for his somewhat different approach: In front of his team, he emphasized that he wanted to become champion. The Vorarlberger also used special methods in preparation: After the only friendly win in Molln (7-0), the forward kickers had to run 30 penalty loops because they did not score the required ten goals. Ten rounds were due for each missed goal. Overall, the Steyr kickers still had to complete almost nine kilometers after the 90 minutes.
A lot has also happened in the squad: Because Madlener only wants players who can be part of every training session, some supporters such as the semi-professionals Halbartschlager or Brandstätter said goodbye to the lower house. It was mainly young talent who came – an exciting but risky path. (rawa)
