Tax inspector found guilty of tax fraud in the case of former football player Salvio

The Spanish press reported on Monday that a tax inspector has been sentenced to pay a fine of 18 million euros for tax fraud involving foreign athletes playing in the country.

The verdict sentences three people to 8 years in prison for the ongoing crime of fraud, the ongoing crime of falsifying a public, official and commercial document, and the ongoing crime of using confidential information obtained from a government official.

The inspector, who occupies a high position in the country’s tax authority, was sentenced to two years in prison and a payment of 18.8 million euros, three times the amount received under the scheme.

Three people, whose names were not released, were accused of misappropriating 6.3 million euros from elite athletes in tax returns that were requested without the knowledge of the athletes. Among the “victims” are Nuri Sahini, Hamit Altintop, both ex-Real Madrid, and Toto Salvio, ex-Atletico Madrid. But there are also basketball players.

According to prosecutors, between February 2015 and November 2016, the three defendants used two companies to request tax refunds from the tax authorities, which could be relied upon by athletes who were not aware of these claims by the parties involved.

They demanded a refund of the difference corresponding to the tax withheld paid by the players as residents of Spain and which they actually had to pay as non-resident taxable persons.
