Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo) withstood attacks from Tadej Pogacar (UAE) on Tuesday in the first of three stages of the Tour de France in the Pyrenees and kept the yellow jersey 2 minutes 22 seconds ahead of his opponent.
Canadian Hugo Uhl (Israel) single-handedly won run 16, which connected Carcassonne with Foix (178.5 km) and included two category 1 mountains. And it was on the first climb, to the top of Porte de Leers, 50 km from the end of the stage, that Pogacar struck the initial blow: he got on his bike and soon gained about 30 meters from Vingegor. The leader was slow to respond, but he was efficient when he did and stayed with his rival. At the beginning of the descent, another attack by Pogacar. This time the reaction was instant, and the two Slovenes did not let go of each other until the very finish line in Foix.
This Wednesday a new stage in the Pyrenees: Gaudens-Alto de Peyragudes (129.7 km), with three mountain tests of the 1st category, the last one at the finish line.
tribute to a dead brother
Hugo Hole (Israel) on Tuesday fulfilled his “dream” of “reverence” with a Tour triumph of his brother Pierrick, who died in 2012 after being hit by a drunk driver. “I worked for 10 years and now I got it,” the 31-year-old runner said, recalling the times he watched the Tour on TV with his brother. Hole became the second Canadian to win the race after Steve Bauer in 1988.
