The Olympic downhill, cross-country, XCC and XCE events, which were scheduled to take place from Friday to Sunday in Seia and Marras, have been canceled due to the risk of fire, the Portuguese Cycling Federation (FPC) said on Tuesday. ).

The DHI national championships scheduled in Seiya and the XCO, XCC and XCE scheduled in Marrazes, Leiria have been cancelled.

“The fire hazard was the reason for the negative attitude of officials towards both events, which are due to take place next weekend,” the FPC said in a note released on Tuesday.

National downhill competitions were planned for Seiya in the Guarda region and XCO, XCC and XCE for Marrazes in the Leiria region, with no positive opinion due to the situation in the country.

“Two competitions will be rescheduled with the expectation that they will be held after September 15, the dates will be announced in due course,” adds a source in the federation.

The only event on the cycling calendar still standing this weekend is the Anicolor Grand Prix scheduled for Sunday, the road cycling event that precedes the Volta a Portugal.

The race connects Fermentelos with Agueda, Aveiro, a distance of 170.6 km.

On Tuesday, the government decides whether to extend the high alert due to the risk of a fire in the countryside, which ends at 23:59, or reactivate the contingency regime, which was in effect until Sunday for seven days.

The country faced high temperatures last week, and the hottest day was July 13, when almost all areas were under a red alert, the most severe one issued by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).

Also on July 13, ANEPC recorded the highest number of rural fires this year with 193.
