Germany was eliminated from the European Football Championship. Joachim Loew’s team lost 2-0 to England at Wembley.
The German national soccer team was eliminated in the second round of the EM. Joachim Löw’s team lost 2-0 (0-0) in Wembley against England. The opening goal for the home team in an overall low-point but exciting game scored Raheem Sterling in the 75th minute. Harry Kane, who had been so hapless up until then, completed a counterattack ten minutes later to make it 2-0.
Germany threw everything forward again, but did not have a significant chance of scoring in the final phase either. Thomas Müller had the best opportunity shortly after the English lead 1-0. The Bayern striker ran around 25 meters to England goalkeeper Pickford and then skewed his flat finish just past the gate to the left. Moments later, Kane Germany gave the fatal blow.
Germany tried to get possession of the ball, but too harmless
Germany had started both halves cheerfully and was not vastly inferior to the English. The DFB team, however, developed far too little danger forward. Timo Werner, surprisingly from the start, missed a great chance to score in the first round after a nice pass from Kai Havertz. The English had overall more pull to the goal, Mats Hummels had thwarted a huge chance for Harry Kane with a straddle in the fives before the lead. The bottom line was that the win for the home side was not undeserved.
This is the second time that Germany has left a major tournament early after the embarrassing preliminary round at the 2018 World Cup.
The defeat was Löw’s last game as head coach, who had already announced his resignation before the tournament. England will now face the winners of the round of 16 Sweden against Ukraine on Saturday evening at 9 p.m. in Rome. These two teams will meet in the eighth and final round of 16 in the evening.
