The Dutch jumbo team continues to dominate at will in the Tour de France. With an irresistible start in the uphill final of the 19th stage, Christophe Laporte achieved the fifth stage success for the team of leader Jonas Vingegaard and made France celebrate as well. The tour host had not been able to celebrate a win in this edition until yesterday. Today the Dane Vingegaard can finally close the sack at the 109th edition.
The big final time trial of the 109th Tour of France leads from Lacapelle-Marival to Rocamadour, goes over undulating terrain and is 40 kilometers long. The fate of his teammate Primoz Roglic two years ago should be spared the hitherto sovereign Jumbo captain: At that time, Tadej Pogacar took almost two minutes from his leading Slovenian compatriot in the final fight against the clock and thus set the ranking on the penultimate day of the race the head. Pogacar’s coup brought him the yellow jersey as a tour debutant, Roglic ended up only second place.
Vingegaard has a comfortable 3:26 lead over Pogacar. “Normally he can’t take the butter off his bread anymore. But a fall is never out of the question,” says Eurosport expert Bernhard Eisel. Vingegaard did not want to talk about the tour victory either. “Let’s do it on Sunday,” he said after Thursday’s climb in Hautacam.
Roglic at Welser criterion
Roglic had to drop out early on the tour, but the three-time winner of the Vuelta will be the big star guest at the Wels inner-city criterion next Wednesday. Maker Paul Resch has reached an agreement with the Slovenian.
Viggo Moore (USA) won the first stage of the international junior tour from Haid to Marchtrenk yesterday, while Benjamin Eckerstorfer from Pasching took third place. Jens Verbrugghe (Bel) had won the short time trial prologue beforehand. Today in Rohrbach (from 4 p.m.) there will be a circuit, on Sunday (from 11.30 a.m.) the section from Bad Wimsbach to Straß im Attergau will follow. (free)
