A 62-year-old man was arrested by the judicial police of Braga on suspicion of arson last Wednesday in the parish of the municipality of Viana do Castelo.
The SP statement said the man resides in the parish where the fire occurred, believing “that he would have acted with direct flames and for the purpose of clearing the ground and paths with fire in accordance with the result from which his behavior may have arisen.”
The SP recalls that on the day of the fire, the country was in an emergency situation “due to the maximum risk of fires at a temperature of about 40 degrees Celsius.”
“Given the atmospheric conditions recorded at the time, in which high temperatures combined with low levels of humidity, combined with the presence of fuel, the fire quickly developed and expanded around the perimeter, seriously endangering the aluminum company’s industrial facilities. ., several residential buildings and woodlands located nearby, ”explain in this criminal investigation.
The fire covered about two hectares of forest, consisting mainly of shrubs and trees.
According to PJ, “it was only thanks to the quick and effective intervention of the firefighters of Viana do Castelo, who thus avoided its uncontrolled spread, that the fire did not reach other proportions.”
Today, a sixty-year-old resident will be present in court for enforcement action.
