“Holidays and competitions go hand in hand with us,” reports Ignaz Haider with a smile from Varese, Italy, where the U19 and U23 World Championships are being rowed this week – although the former World Championship participant and his wife Sandra, who also rows, are not there but their three children Greta (17), Vitus (20) and Xaver (21).
The feat that all three qualified for a World Cup is not the first time the Ottensheim family has succeeded. “That was already the case two years ago, but then the World Cup was canceled because of the pandemic,” says Ignaz. This year it worked.
The lads started the World Championships at Haider yesterday, missing out on promotion in a foursome with Fabian Gilhofer and Michal Karlovsky in sixth place. “They parked in third place at half-time because they saw that the necessary first place would not be enough,” analyzes the father. Although this saved energy for today’s repechage, it was difficult to make it into the A final. According to the father, daughter Greta is very likely to do this in a double scull with Emma Gutsjahr. Wiking Linz colleague Konrad Hultsch entered the semifinals yesterday as the winner of the repechage. (pue)
