Skate grows: San Fernando receives competition thinking about Paris 2024

The national leadership has organized a series of tournaments (provincial in the ASKBA, national in the CAP and international with the CSP) to enhance the level of the athletes (and the hotbed), dozens of new tracks have been inaugurated (the last one was the first Olympic design in San Juan) and in 2021 new coaches took over the National Team (Martín Pibotto, nationally recognized, for the Major and Yago Fernández for the U18), with the aim of increasing the evaluation of talents and putting together a national park and street team, the two Olympic categories. The results are being noticed. As it happened in Rome, a couple of weeks ago, on the first date of the World Cup that is part of the classification for Paris 2024. Mauro Iglesias and Matías Dell Olio achieved an outstanding fifth place, Joel De Castro finished 25th and Juan Pablo Mateos was 35th. In women, Maira Alfonso finished 27th, Guadalupe Orellano 34th and Aldana Bertrán, 57th. An interesting combo considering that it was a Pro Tour level competition.

Now, in October, the new World Cup event is coming up in Rio de Janeiro and for that this Saturday a new perspective will be held in San Fernando, with free admission. “This past weekend we had free practice but we couldn’t hold the event due to adverse weather conditions and we moved it to this Saturday the 30th. We want to invite all the skaters in the country to come and enjoy the tournament without having to pay registration and , incidentally, be evaluated by the coaches of our national teams and technical representatives of Enard “explained Eric Angulo, Director of the National Skateboarding Committee of the Argentine Skating Confederation.

At the skatepark on Avenida Sobremonte and Guido Spano, there will be a display that lives up to the importance of the event: live music with DJ Xolarz, two giant screens, a live streaming service and the locution of Camila Poli and Mostry Reinas. First, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., they will compete in the park and then, from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., it will be the turn of the street. There will be five amateur categories (U10, U14, U18, Over 18 and Over 35) and professionals. The presence of great figures from all over the country and young promises of the sport is expected, including many skaters from the interior of the country, some of whom decided to stay the whole week in Buenos Aires so as not to come and go.

Pibotto will continue with an evaluation “which includes the national ranking, what each one has been doing at a sporting level and also the intangibles that go hand in hand with what the Olympics demands, from professionalism to the behavior of athletes off the slopes”clarified the national coach.

Although in the environment of this sport there is a certain rejection towards Olympism, which ensures that the Games need skateboarding more than the other way around, from the CAP skateboarding department they believe that this system “has other advantages and came to give more equality to the sport because before the classifications were invitational and now there is a quota per country, which gives more chances to other countries, such as Argentina, which has been growing a lot”, as Ary Angulo, Director of the Skateboarding Committee of the South American Confederation, explained.

Argentine athletes receive more support from Enard, which has also strengthened their interest in national skate tournaments. In April, for example, the last one was held, in Magdalena, which classified three men and three women for the South American Championship in Asunción, which will be played in October. Mauro Iglesias won the competition, confirming that he is the best Argentine of today and the greatest hope for Argentina to have its first Olympic representative. Second was Juan Pablo Mateos and third, Juan Ignacio Lima. Among the girls, Maira Alfonso won, second was Ailín Arzúa and third, Melisa Ruiz.

This Saturday, in San Fernando, the skate scene is eagerly awaited. Another excuse to have fun, compete and show off, depending on the goals of each skater. Meanwhile the growth of this sport seems unstoppable…
