Brazilian international Neymar will be on trial from 17 to 31 October for alleged violations committed during the transfer of Santos to FC Barcelona, judicial sources confirmed this Wednesday to news agencies Efe and AFP.
Neymar will answer in a Barcelona court for fraud and corruption, like other participants in the process: the parents of the current Paris Saint-Germain striker and former presidents of the Spanish club Josep Maria Bartomeu and Sandro Rosell.
Violations committed during Neymar’s transfer to Barcelona are at stake, such as the signing of a fictitious contract during negotiations between 2011 and 2013, which will be considered in seven sessions and could lead to jail terms for five of the participants.
The case was condemned by an investment fund that owned 40% of Neymar’s economic rights and considered that he was harmed in the process, as happened later with the federation of Brazilian athletes’ associations, which would also be entitled to a percentage of the transfer fee.
The public ministry is asking for two years in prison and a fine of 10 million euros (ME) for Neymar, two years for the footballer’s father and one year for the mother, in addition to a fine of 1.4 IU for the family business.
For Sandro Rosell, who at the time of the events was the president of Barcelona, the public ministry asks for five years in prison, while Josep Maria Bartomeu, then the club’s vice president, is blamed only by the investment fund, which also asks for five years in prison.
This is the second trial involving the Brazilian striker, the first ended in an agreement between the Spanish court and Barcelona, who paid ME 5.5 and were found guilty of two tax offences.
