Diogo Jota to miss FA Super Cup against Manchester City due to injury

Portugal striker Diogo Jota has suffered a hamstring injury and will miss the FA Super Cup game against Manchester City on Saturday, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp announced on Thursday.

The 25-year-old winger did not travel with the Reds for an internship in Austria this week, he has stayed in Liverpool to recover as his absence from Saturday’s Community Shield in Leicester is a certainty.

“Diogo [Jota] not with us, so how could he play football? It will take some time [para regressar]unfortunately,” the German coach said.

The first trophy of the 2022/23 season up for grabs is ‘very important’, especially since Liverpool have yet to win it under Klopp.

“We have played this ‘final’ several times and it would be nice if we could win. This is the last national cup tournament we haven’t won yet, so let’s give it a try,” he said.

Aside from Jota, the Merseyside team may not have goalkeeper Alisson Becker against the Citizens as he recovers from injury.

The match between Liverpool and the British champions Manchester City, in which the Portuguese Ruben Dias, Joao Cancelo and Bernardo Dias will meet, will start at 17:00 at the King Power Stadium in Leicester.
