That’s it. The German national soccer team has dropped out of the European championship. The 2-0 defeat against England also marks the end of the Joachim Löw era – the reactions after the final whistle.
Tears for some DFB players on the Wembley lawn: With a 2-0 draw in the round of 16 against England, the German national team said goodbye to the European Championship. After the preliminary round at the World Cup three years ago, it is the next bitter disappointment for the German selection under national coach Joachim Löw, whose time in the coaching bench ended with this game after around 15 years.
The reactions after the final whistle on ARD and Magenta TV:
National coach Joachim Löw: “This is a huge disappointment for all of us. We really hoped for more and the belief in this team was absolutely there. In games like this, it is simply crucial that you use the few chances that you sometimes have consistently and we had two big chances – Timo Werner and Thomas Müller unfortunately didn’t score any goals – and that’s why we’re sorry that we are now are out of the tournament. (…) We would have hoped for something different at this tournament and that’s why I’m sorry that the great enthusiasm that was there at home is now of course gone with such a game.”
Captain Manuel Neuer: “We missed the chance, so the disappointment is huge. (…) The game was also on the brink. In the first half, Timo Werner had a great chance if we make it 1-0, or with Thomas (Müller, editor’s note), if he makes it 1-1 in the situation, then things will turn here maybe a lot. And you could already see that the audience was a bit restless and now of course they’re all loud, that’s clear, they made progress, but it wasn’t always the case that they yelled at us against the wall and were convinced that England will definitely get ahead.”
Toni Kroos: “It was a very, very even game up to the 1-0. I think both teams neutralized each other a bit, so it is of course bitter, of course. (…) The 1-0 naturally changed everything. I think we didn’t give England much chances before, nor did we have many, it was an even game up until then. Up until then we had played an absolutely decent game. (…) If you go out in the round of 16, it’s disappointing. We prevailed in a group that was difficult, but overall: If you drop out, it’s very, very bitter.”
Kai Havertz: “I thought it was an equal match in the first half. England don’t have a bad team either. If you’re knocked out in the round of 16, of course, it’s disappointing. It’s a bitter evening.”
