Sebastian Vettel announced this Thursday that he will retire from Formula 1 at the end of the season. In a lengthy message left on Aston Martin’s official website, the German four-time world champion driver thanked him for “the privilege of working with so many great people over the past 15 years.”
“Over the past 15 years I have had the privilege of working with so many great people in Formula 1 and there are so many people to be mentioned and thanked. I have been driving Aston Martin for the last two years and although our results are not as good as we hoped, it is clear to me that everything is being done to ensure that the team performs at the highest level in the coming years. I hope that the work I did last year and what I’m doing this year will be useful for developing a team that will win in the future,” he began.
He continued: “I really enjoyed working with such a large group of people at Aston Martin. They are ambitious, capable, experienced, smart and friendly and I wish them all the best. The decision to leave was difficult for me. and I think about it a lot; at the end of the year, I want to have more time to think about what I’m going to focus on next. It is very clear to me that as a father I want to spend more time with my family. But today is not the day to say goodbye. I want to thank everyone, especially the fans, knowing that Formula 1 could not exist without their support,” he concluded.
Lawrence Stroll, boss of Aston Martin, assured that he wants to count on Vettel next year, but stressed that he respects the German’s decision. “I want to thank Sebastian from the bottom of my heart for the great work he has done for Aston Martin over the past year and a half. We made it clear that we wanted him to stay with us next year, but in the end he ultimately decided what was best for him and for the company. families. We respect it.”
