Benfica President Rui Costa said this Sunday that he is delighted to celebrate the triple jump world title with Pedro Pichardo, an athlete who has found “stability” in Portugal and Benfica to develop “outstanding potential”.

“I am celebrating with you this title of world champion with special emotions. Congratulations, Pedro Pablo Pichardo. We are proud of this great achievement, less than a year after the Olympic gold won in Tokyo, equally with impeccable merit and talent,” said the head of do Benfica, the Pichardo club.

Rui Costa added that this achievement is another outstanding achievement in world athletics for an athlete who “found in Portugal and Sport Lisboa e Benfica the stability and ideal conditions to unleash his remarkable potential.”

On Saturday, Pedro Pichardo won the triple jump world title in Eugene, USA with a score of 17.95 meters, beating Hugh Fabrice Zango (17.55) of Burkina Faso and China’s Yaming Zhu (17.31) on the first attempt.

The Benfica athlete, gold medalist at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo on August 5, 2021, became the seventh Portuguese to win the world title in athletics, after Fernanda Ribeiro, Manuela Machado, Carla Sacramento, Ines Henriquez, Rosa Mota and Nelson Evora.
