The 24-year-old Brit spectacularly prevailed in the last second in qualifying on the outskirts of Budapest and pushed Carlos Sainz into second place in the Ferrari. Charles Leclerc, who finished second in the World Championship, took third place in the second Ferrari. World champion Max Verstappen only finished tenth due to technical problems. For Russell it was the first pole of his career.
