FIFA gets fully involved in the sports political conflict in El Salvador

The FIFA and the government of The Savior intensified since mid-July a dispute over control of the Salvadoran Football Federation (FESFUT)which according to the new law must submit to disciplinary and accountability rules that conflict with those already established by the governing body of world football.

The confrontation hardened after the expiration in July of a term that the Bukele government gave to the directors of the FESFUT to implement the provisions of the law, which dates from 2019.

With the establishment of the committee on Monday, which also involved the retirement of the current directors of FESFUT, FIFA seeks to resume the sporting, administrative and financial direction of the federation.

The committee’s decisions “will be final and binding,” said the FIFA in a letter released on Monday by the FESFUT, in which he added that the functions of the commission will not extend more than 12 months once it appoints its members.

On July 14, the prosecutor’s office in El Salvador raided the offices of the FESFUT and the house of its president, Hugo Carrillo, after accusations of possible money laundering. by the Salvadoran sports institute, INDES.

The next day, seven FESFUT directors, including Cheek, they were suspended from their duties by an INDES disciplinary tribunal for refusing to “align” their statutes with those of the current general law.

In another decision that raised tensions, INDES appointed a few days later a commission to regulate the operation of the federation, to which FIFA replied that it could initiate a sanctioning process against FESFUT.

INDES, which did not respond to a Reuters request for comment on FIFA’s announcement, withdrew the commission shortly after.
