EM 2021: Ukraine after beating Sweden in the quarter-finals

Goal in overtime stoppage time: Ukraine was the last team to reach the quarter-finals of the 2021 European Championship with a win against Sweden. Sweden ended up being outnumbered in the unspectacular game.

The quarter-final opponent of Germany-conquerors England is certain: Ukraine beat the last knockout round of this European football championship 2-1 and thus reached the round of eight. Artem Dovbyk scored the winning goal in extra time and made the Ukrainians under coach Andrij Shevchenko cheer. Oleksandr Zinchenko crossed from the left lane into the middle. The goal scorer ran in between the Swedish central defenders and headed into the goal from six meters.

Ukraine are in the quarter-finals of the EM 2021

Ukraine had taken the lead in the 27th minute through Zinchenko with a remarkable half-volley goal from eight meters before Emil Forsberg equalized in the 43rd minute. A powerful shot from 25 meters was deflected and landed unsustainably in the Ukrainian goal. Afterwards, neither of the two teams could count anything in the regular season, it went into overtime.

In this, Sweden had to make do with only ten men from the 100th minute. Marcus Danielson saw the red card after he hit the ball with an outstretched leg, but also unintentionally hit the leg of opponent Artem Bjessjedin with full force. After viewing the video images, referee Daniele Orsato from Italy decided to be sent off – tough, but compliant with the rules. Bjessjedin had to be replaced because of the injury. Ultimately, Ukraine succeeded in stoppage time with the lucky punch against the outnumbered Swedes

The team will now face England in the quarter-finals next Saturday, who beat Germany 2-0 in the first game of the day. The kick-off in the Olympic Stadium in Rome is at 9 p.m. There are no games at the EM on Wednesday and Thursday. The other quarter-finals are Switzerland against Spain (Friday, 6 p.m., St. Petersburg), Belgium against Italy (Friday, 9 p.m., Munich) and the Czech Republic against Denmark (Saturday, 6 p.m., Baku).
