At a second division game of Erling Braut Haaland’s youth club Byrne FK, fans of opposing club SK Brann held up a banner that read: “Hello farmers! Bride plays for dirty blood money. There is only one Haaland.”
Apart from the fact that Haaland also plays at Brann with 17-year-old Markus Haaland, the poster criticizes the recent move by national team striker Erling Braut Haaland from Dortmund to Manchester City for 75 million euros.
The Premiere League club is majority-owned by Abu Dhabi United Group Investment and the Emirate of Abu Dhabi is accused of several human rights violations. This does not go down well with many in liberal Norway. “Haaland cannot escape criticism. He could have picked any other club in the world,” SK Brann fan spokesman Erlend Ytre-Arne Vagane told Norwegian broadcaster NRK.
The English champions start the new season against West Ham on Sunday.
