Press reviews
Germany dropped out of the much-feared “group of deaths” in the round of 16 – as did Portugal and France before. The international press comments on the EM-Aus.
In the preliminary round of the European Championship, Germany played in the much-discussed “group of deaths” – with reigning European champions Portugal and world champions France. Now the German national team is the last team from the dreaded group against England to be thrown out of the tournament in the round of 16. This sealed the end of the Low era.
One who was particularly triumphant that night was England coach Gareth Southgate. If he missed the penalty in 1996 against the German boys, who then became European champions, history did not repeat itself this time in London’s Wembley Stadium. But England’s national team didn’t shine as usual either.
This is how international media comment on the game.
ENGLAND
“Daily Mail”: “No, you’re not dreaming. Is he coming home now? (…) The royal lucky charm Prince George sees England beat Germany 2-0.”
“Times”: England banishes some old ghosts, defeats Germany deservedly. ”
“Sun”: “At a rocking Wembley, Gareth Southgate’s team showed an un-English sense of sanity as they bore the Germans to death on their way to their fourth straight clean sheet.”
FRANCE:
“L’Équipe”: “The death group is … dead. There was no miracle in the football temple. Time for the Hansi Flick era.”
SPAIN:
“AS”: “Wembley is raging. Löw is saying goodbye in the worst possible way. At this level neither England, let alone Germany, which went home, are ready to win this European Championship.”
“Marca”: “Grealish’s magic ends England’s trauma against Germany”

ITALY:
“La Gazzetta dello Sport”: “Germany has to bow to Sterling and Kane: England in the quarter-finals! Germany is going home and going on vacation. The end in the second round also ends the era of Joachim Löw. None of the group of deaths make it into the quarter-finals . ” “Corriere dello Sport”: “Sterling and Kane bring Southgate to the quarter-finals in Rome. The English win a nice and even game. The lightning bolts of the two attackers decide. Löw’s team is too imprecise in attack and is delivered to the knife by Müller . Sterling and Kane make history at Wembley. ”
AUSTRIA:
“Krone”: “Three Lions are chasing Germany out of the EM!”
