Without a partner to the EM

Julian Schöberl is actually a regular starter in double sculls, the only Olympic lightweight boat class. At the European Rowing Championships, which begin in Munich on Thursday, the Urfahraner has to compete in the unfamiliar one. A Covid infection from boat partner Lukas Reim is to blame. Schöberl had recently finished seventh with the Salzburger at the World Cup in Poznan. Magdalena Lobnig is healthy this time, but the Olympic bronze medalist had to lower her expectations after a two-month forced break last time. At the end of May, the Carinthian canceled the first World Cup of the season in Belgrade due to breathing problems. “It will be important that I can call up my performance and row to the final with little effort,” says the 32-year-old.

A Lobnig does not come alone this time, as Sister Katharina forms a double scull with Tabea Minichmayr. With Jakob Stadler, Lorenz Lindorfer and Gabriel Stekl, three other Upper Austrians are in action at the European Championships. The trio sits with the Viennese Rudolf Querfeld in a coxless four.
