Referee ruled forward: 2-1 win

In front of the supermarket checkout, customers would have grumbled about Oliver Filip, as he pushed his way forward. In the Steyr Liwest Stadium, he was allowed to extend his hand in the Dornbirn penalty area in the second Bundesliga as a back man. After Lorenz Rusch had brought him down in the ensuing scuffle, referee Alexander Harkam’s whistle immediately blew the penalty whistle. Günes ran, shot weakly or Dornbirn’s goalkeeper Justin Ospelt defended well – in any case, Oguzhan Sivrikaya was the first to ambush the bouncing ball and dusted it off to make it 1-1.

A referee can give the penalty kick, Filip, who had been looking for a duel in the blink of an eye, was thrown to the ground illegally. But the penalty called for a video check – if it would exist in the second division. It is quite conceivable that the referees would have overruled the decision to take the penalty kick in front of the screen because of a previous foul by a striker.

However, the penalty turned the game around. The forward eleven, who recently had some bad luck themselves with referee decisions, also benefited from a tough, albeit justifiable, dismissal from Vorarlberg’s Favali. In the 52nd minute, referee Harkam had decided in doubt for the attacking team to “go for a goal”. At this point, coach Daniel Madlener’s team had to catch up from a 1-0 deficit, which they caught in the 15th minute when the defense fell asleep for a second.

Vorwarts’ back team then built up the game solidly despite the opponent’s pressing, but at the edge of the penalty area the players in front made too many imprecise passes and many a ball flew into the void. So Dornbirn was back in the game. Steyr’s goalkeeper Florian Eres, who was also a convincing footballer, had to use all his skills on the line to prevent another goal being conceded. It wasn’t until the 89th minute that the forward eleven brought the playfulness they’ve got onto the pitch: Sivrikaya completed a dream combination with a brace to win 2-1. Three points that are also “extremely important” for Daniel Madlener: Steyrer really don’t want to move into the bottom of the table this year.
