In the European Championship round of 16 against England, Germany was initially behind. Thomas Müller could have equalized in the 81st minute – but he missed. The footballer spoke up on Instagram.
In the second round it was already over for the German national team. In the game against England Germany had to admit defeat 2-0. Thomas Müller is one of the most tragic figures of the evening. In the 81st minute, the striker ran alone towards the goal – and missed the target by a few centimeters.
The 31-year-old now reported to his fans on Instagram with emotional words. He also posted a picture of the disappointing moment, which can be seen as a symbol of the German performance at the EM: After his missed shot, Müller knelt in front of the goal and pulled his hair.
Thomas Müller: “It hurts me a lot”
In his posting, the footballer writes moving lines and apologizes to his fans. “There it was, that one moment that you will remember in the end, that brings you to sleep at night. For which you work, train and live as a footballer. That moment when you have it alone in your hands, your team to bring back into a close knockout game and to send an entire football nation into ecstasy. ”
Getting this opportunity and leaving it idle is damned painful for him. “It hurts me for the whole DFB team, my teammates and our coach, who all gave me the confidence to be there right then,” he continues. But most of all it hurts because of all the Germany fans out there who have stuck to the team and supported it during this EM despite difficult omens. Finally he said: “Thank you for your support”.

Future is unclear
The Bayern professional, who was brought back to the European Championship, did not comment on his future in the national team. For Joachim Löw it was the last game as national coach. He will be replaced by Hansi Flick, who was Löw’s assistant coach in 2014 – the year Germany became world champions.
