Swimming coach Bernd Berkhahn doesn’t believe that freestyle expert Lukas Märtens can already attack Paul Biedermann’s world record over 400 meters at the upcoming European Championships in Rome.
“He won’t be able to match that because the preparation was not good with the corona infection,” said long-distance national coach Berkhahn, who looks after Märtens in Magdeburg. “I’ll be happy if he can match the performance at the World Cup.”
At the World Championships in Budapest a month ago, Märtens had won the silver medal in the 400 meter freestyle. Before the title fights, Märtens had given Biedermann’s world record as a goal in his career. In April, the 20-year-old had struck after 3:41.60 minutes. Biedermann has held the record since the 2009 World Cup in Rome with a time of 3:40.07 minutes. Märtens had contracted the corona virus after the World Cup in Hungary.
