Now it’s official: Red Bull Salzburg lets Benjamin Sesko go. As expected, the 19-year-old striker is moving to RB Leipzig, but not until the 2023/24 season. For the rest of the current season, he is still wearing the Mozartstadt jersey. In Leipzig he received a five-year contract. The transfer fee is said to be 24 million euros.
Salzburg sporting director Christoph Freund explains: “Benji is a player with an incredible amount of potential and talent. It’s not surprising that this doesn’t go unnoticed by big clubs either. In recent months there has been a lot of talk about a possible transfer and a lot about his Future speculated. So that we can plan accordingly, we have created clarity about his future at an early stage, which is also in the interest of the player and important for him. Benji is now looking forward to our big goals and challenges in the current season in the championship together with us , to tackle with full focus in the Cup and in the Champions League.”
The tall striker came to Salzburg from his native Slovenia from NK Domzale in the summer of 2019, where he was first used in the U18s of the Red Bull Academy (five matches, seven goals) and as a cooperation player at FC Liefering (44 games, 22 goals). and in the UEFA Youth League (eight games, two goals). In the 2021/22 season, Sesko was promoted to the FC Red Bull Salzburg squad, where he has scored 12 goals in 39 games so far. He was in the starting XI for every game this year. “I’ve read and heard so much about myself over the last few weeks, a lot of which didn’t correspond to reality. To put an end to the speculation and to be able to concentrate fully on my tasks here at FC Red Bull Salzburg, it was me important to decide on my next career step now. I wanted to get clarity as quickly as possible on how things are going to continue. For me personally, absolutely nothing else has changed, I will continue to give everything for the success of FC Red Bull Salzburg, because we have in the a lot ahead of the current season,” said Sesko. The 19-year-old continues: “I am very happy that I can make the step to RB Leipzig in 2023 and that the change has already been fixed. RB Leipzig is one of the top clubs in Germany and is gradually establishing itself among the best teams in Europe. A special success story was written here in just a few years – and I would like to help shape it in the future.”
