The Dortmund team react to the shortage of personnel in the defense and bring Marin Pongracic, an old friend of coach Marco Rose’s, to BVB.
Shortly before the end of the transfer period, DFB Cup winners Borussia Dortmund are strengthening themselves with central defender Marin Pongracic from Bundesliga rivals VfL Wolfsburg. Both clubs officially confirmed this on Monday afternoon.
Pongracic will initially be loaned to BVB from Wolfsburg for one season. Then the black and yellow media reports have a purchase option, which should be around twelve million euros. The contract of the Croatian national player with VfL runs until 2024. “Marin is a young central defender with speed who completes our defensive”, BVB sports director Michael Zorc is quoted in Dortmund’s announcement.
BVB: Marco Rose knows Marin Pongracic from Salzburg
Dortmund’s injury problems plague defensive players, most recently midfielder Axel Witsel helping out in central defense. A transfer for the defensive center has therefore always been considered an option in the past few days and weeks.
Pongracic knows Dortmund coach Marco Rose very well. Both already worked together at Red Bull Salzburg. From there, the 23-year-old moved to Wolfsburg in January 2020 for ten million euros. Since then, he has played 23 competitive games (two goals) for the Bundesliga leaders.
