Cyclist Frederico Figueiredo (Glassdrive) became the new leader of the 83rd Volta a Portugal after winning stage 5, which ended at Vila Nova Observatory, Miranda do Corvo. The 31-year-old, born in São Sebastian da Pedreira, ripped the yellow jersey off his teammate Mauricio Moreira, who lost time this Wednesday in the final 10km climb never used in the Volta in Portugal.
After a day of rest, this Wednesday’s 165.7km leg kicked off at Mealhada and the peloton set a strong pace without allowing any escapes. A day break eventually formed at km 84 and involved 11 cyclists. The group never got much of an advantage, and with 25 kilometers to go, the yellow jersey team picked up the pace and canceled the breakout. There were several escape attempts on the final climb, but the difficulty of the climb made it possible to choose the best one. Less than four kilometers from the goal, Frederico Figueiredo launched an attack and left everyone stranded, including the yellow jersey. As a result, Figueiredo single-handedly won at the finish line at the Vila Nova observatory. In second place was Enrique Casimiro (Efapel) and Luis Fernandez (Radio Popular-Boavista) was third. Mauricio Moreira ended up minimizing losses and ended up in fourth position, 37 seconds behind his winning teammate and now the leader of the race. Frederico Figueiredo is seven seconds ahead of Mauricio Moreira and 38 seconds ahead of Luis Fernandez.
This Thursday will be the sixth stage between the cities of Agueda and Maya at a distance of 159.9 km.
