Her seeding for the European Table Tennis Championships, which begin today in Munich, is already promising: Sofia Polcanova is going into the tournament as number three in singles and doubles (with Romanian Bernadette Szöcs). And if the 27-year-old had been playing with Robert Gardos for a longer period of time, she would also be ranked higher than tenth in mixed.
Polcanova managed to win three medals at a European Championship four years ago, when she took home bronze in singles and silver in doubles and mixed from Alicante. “It was mentally very exhausting back then,” remembers the Linz native of the triple burden. “After fixing the mixed medal, I even had to run to my first singles game. I was late and couldn’t even change my sweaty T-shirt,” says Polcanova. Because of the overlap, the organizers had been waiting for them. Something similar could bloom again in Munich. But she doesn’t want to talk about three medals: “One would be nice.”
Karoline Mischek, who had to have an operation on her hip in the spring, was fit for the European Championships in good time. The 24-year-old is ninth seeded in doubles with her English doubles partner Ho Tin-Tin. In singles, Mischek has to qualify against Zdena Blaskova (Cze) and Angela Rodriguez (Esp).
Andreas Levenko also wants to survive this. In his preliminary round group, the 24-year-old will have to deal with Zsolt Petö from Hungary, a former Wels legionnaire.
