National team: Flick would like all DFB teams to have female power

Men’s national coach Hansi Flick (57) believes that women’s national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg (54) is capable of any job in the football business. “Martina and I have the same coaching qualifications. I like her style, I like the way she sees football, she is an absolute professional. I trust her to be capable of any task. When I think back to November 2019: not everyone believed me that I could coach FC Bayern Munich,” said Flick to the “RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland”. Flick had taken over Bayern as Nico Kovac’s successor and led the record champions to a treble in August 2020.

Flick says in the interview that you have a very good relationship with the women’s coaching team and have already held joint workshops. “Martina Voss-Tecklenburg and her team have approaches that are interesting for us and vice versa. You exchange ideas at eye level, everyone takes something away with them – that’s what it’s all about.”

For example, he really liked how the two central defenders at the European Championships in England dribbled straight away when they had the ball. “The football that our women played is extraordinary, at a high level, with this high intensity. That’s what we want from all our teams in the DFB,” says Flick.

Regarding the debate about equal play, Flick said that in his talks with the national coach and some national players, he heard “that the main thing for them is that the conditions have to be further adjusted. The training has to improve.” The German Football Association (DFB) would work on these points at all levels. “We have to continue and intensify this path, we have to promote female talent even more, also in the youth academies of the clubs. We have to support the clubs even more. It will pay off.”

Regarding equal pay, Flick says: “Oliver Bierhoff’s statements were absolutely correct – you shouldn’t ignore the bonus distribution of the associations and the sales. We’re already in a good position in Germany – and it’s being further optimized.”

During the visit of Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) last Tuesday, DFB President Bernd Neuendorf announced a debate in the DFB about aligning the bonuses for the women’s national team with the payments for the men. However, it must also be “acknowledged” that “despite the same activities, the markets are still very different,” said Neuendorf.

Scholz made his point of view clear once again: “I think it’s something political, so it makes sense to discuss equal bonuses.” The chancellor got involved in the discussion during the women’s European Championship in England and called for equal pay for men and women in the national teams via Twitter.
