Dattke on course for gold for a long time

16 years after the sensational European Championship title for Ulrike Maisch from Rostock, Dattke ran for European Championship gold with two kilometers to go. Then Lisowska broke away, while Dattke behind him ended up empty-handed in a fascinating final phase. “I’m super happy, of course I would have liked to have won a medal,” said Dattke, adding: “The mood is awesome.”

Four laps had to be completed on a circuit through downtown Munich. The climatic conditions due to the start time at 10.30 a.m. were not as difficult as long feared. At the start it was 19 degrees under a cloudy sky, at the finish it was 22 degrees in sunshine and around 60 percent humidity.
