King Luis Gomes on the trail in the Volta in Portugal

And at the seventh stage of Volta a Portugal 2022, the breakthrough took hold and crowned Luis Gomes. The cyclist Kelly-Simoldes was part of a group of fugitives, which included up to 15 elements, but the ascent to Sameiro (Braga) was reduced. Gomes (28), born in Vila Nova de Gaia, won the shortened sprint between Gonzalo Léas (OAC Aluminos-Credibom) and Ciomina Juaristi (Euscatel-Euskadi) finishing second and third respectively.

The 150.1 km run, the shortest of the race, tied Santo Tirso with Braga. He walked at high speed (42 km/h on average) and was very busy. The group of 15 cyclists who escaped from the peloton had a lead of more than four minutes, but with 25 km to go, the peloton, led by the team in the yellow jersey, picked up their pace and closed the gap. In the second category ascent of Sameiro, Luis Gómez was one of the most active and ended up reaping the rewards by breaking the finish line first. The group of favorites arrived in a minute and 46 seconds.

The individual overall result remained unchanged, with Federico Figueiredo holding the yellow jersey, the symbol of the race leader. His teammate Mauricio Moreira stays at seven seconds, while Luis Fernandes (Boavista) stays at 38 seconds.

This Friday will see the 8th stage of 182.4 km, which will connect the cities of Viana do Castelo and Fafe.
