Exceptional swimmer Florian Wellbrock is not yet in top form after his corona infection, but he is confident and relaxed in the EM final over 1500 meters freestyle.

“Aiming for the final and everything that comes with a medal or no medal is simply on top,” said the 24-year-old before the final on Tuesday evening. The goal of the Magdeburg was: “Have fun. Be there.”

He doesn’t want to be pressured. “I showed what I can do at the World Championships,” he said. “That’s why I don’t need to go overboard here.” At the World Championships in Budapest, Wellbrock had won five medals in five starts in the pool and open water. The open water Olympic champion then fell ill with Covid-19.

“The body is still a bit tired overall due to the lack of training,” said Wellbrock. He won bronze in the 1500m at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
