Britney Griner’s lawyers appeal against 9-year prison sentence

Lawyers for American basketball player Britney Griner have filed an appeal against her 9-year prison sentence for possession of drugs.

The athlete, detained in February at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport, had cannabis oil in her luggage. The verdict was handed down on August 4th.

Griner played for the women’s basketball team in Yekaterinburg during the WNBA offseason.

According to news agencies, the appeal was filed by lawyer Maria Blagovolina. However, the grounds for supporting the appeal were not immediately clarified. The US State Department considered the young woman’s detention unfair.

During the trial, the 31-year-old basketball player pleaded guilty, but stated that she had no criminal intent to import cannabis oil into Russia during the season in which she was supposed to play in the Russian basketball league. The defense team submitted written statements that he was prescribed cannabis for pain relief.
