From today, the maximum prices for gas cylinders come into force

The maximum prices for a bottle of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) set by the government come into effect on Tuesday and represent a savings of nearly 3.2 euros for a 13 kilograms (kg) bottle of butane.

On Friday, the government again set maximum prices for bottled gas, as it had already done during the covid-19 pandemic, specifying that a 13-kilogram (kg) bottle of butane would have a maximum price of €29.47 and 12.5-kilogram bottles will cost up to 28.34 euros, according to the Energy Services Regulatory Authority (ERSE).

In the case of T3 propane LPG, the maximum ranges from 29.11 euros for an 11 kg bottle to 23.81 kg for a 9 kg bottle.

On the other hand, T5 LPG propane tanks will cost up to 109.08 euros (45 kg) or 84.84 euros (35 kg).

According to data sent to Lusa by the Ministry of the Environment, these maximums, considering the prices announced in the first days of August, represent a savings of 3,180 euros per bottle in the case of 13 kg bottles of T3.

In the case of a T3 cylinder for 11 kg of propane, the savings are 3,258 euros.

Already in a T5 cylinder for 45 kg of propane, the savings are 6,206 euros.

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Action reminded on Friday that Law no.

ERSE is responsible for setting a maximum margin for any commercial component that forms part of the selling price of bottled LPG to the public.

In turn, and after consultation with the Competition Authority, the government may, on an exceptional basis, set limits.

“Within this framework and on the basis of the proposal received from ERSE and the opinion of the Competition Authority and on its grounds, for reasons of public interest and in order to ensure the normal functioning of the market and the protection of consumer rights, the Government of Portugal considers that the implementation of the rules concerning the establishment of a maximum margin and the corresponding price for the sale of bottled LPG to the public, seems justified for a limited period of time (until October 31, 2022),” he said.

In a diploma published in Diário da República, the executive director noted that monthly fluctuations are calculated and published on the ERSE website, and that “delivery service costs” can only be added to these maximum prices if bottles are purchased at telephone or electronically and be available at a location other than the place of sale.

Supply stations and other points of sale of LPG cylinders must “guarantee a continuous supply” of cylinders, “namely those types covered by the fixed price”, as stated in the regulation signed by the Ministers of Economy João Neves and Environment and Energy, João Galamba .
