More than 1,000 firefighters are fighting the Serra da Estrela fire, supported by more than 300 vehicles, according to the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC).
The fire, first alerted at dawn on the 6th but which re-emerged this Monday, affected the municipalities of Manteigas, Covilhã and Guarda and was the only major fire on the Portuguese mainland at 4:30 am, according to the same source. .
The latest situation report, prepared by the national civil protection commander on Monday evening, showed that the flames were raging at “high intensity”, registering “aggressive behavior”.
The resurgence of the Serra da Estrela fire on Monday was the result of “three fires at the same time in Vale da Amoreira” in Manteigas, Guarda district, “with spread to the municipalities of Covilhã”. [distrito de Castelo Branco] and Guarda,” added Andre Fernandes.
