In 4:04.13 minutes, the 20-year-old relegated the Italian Simona Quadarella, European champion over 800 and 1500 meters, to second place. Third was the Hungarian Ajna Kessely. The second German finalist, Julia Mrozinski, finished eighth.
“I was hoping for the gold medal so much,” said Gose, who celebrated her greatest success. “I’m relieved but also totally exhausted,” said the woman from Magdeburg, who swam the race from the front and thus dominated the competition.
